Ontario is a hotspot in Canada for tornadoes again this year — the first tornado struck in winter. Here’s what’s ‘a bit unusual’ about the season so far.
Wild winter weather
Ontario recorded 17 tornadoes last year, which was well above the provincial average. So far this year, the province has already seen three tornadoes and another three possible tornadoes.
The first tornado of the year touched down in Leamington, Ont., on Jan. 12, during a winter storm. It was the first January tornado on record in Canada since 1984.
The other two tornadoes touched down in April and May. Both were rated EF2, with wind speeds of up to 190 km/h. No injuries were reported in any of the three tornadoes.
What’s causing the increase in tornadoes?
There is no single factor that is causing the increase in tornadoes in Ontario. However, there are a few factors that may be contributing.
One factor is the changing climate. As the global climate warms, the atmosphere becomes warmer and more humid, which can create more favourable conditions for tornadoes to form.
Another factor is the increase in population in Ontario. As more people move to the province, the risk of tornadoes increases because there are more people and property that can be affected.
What can we do to stay safe?
There are a few things you can do to stay safe during tornado season:
- Be aware of the weather forecast and be prepared to take shelter if a tornado warning is issued.
- If you are outside when a tornado warning is issued, seek shelter in a sturdy building.
- If you are in a car, pull over to the side of the road and stay inside the vehicle.
- If you are in a mobile home, leave immediately and seek shelter in a sturdy building.
What’s the outlook for the rest of the season?
It is difficult to say what the outlook is for the rest of the tornado season in Ontario. However, the province is typically at risk for tornadoes from April to September.
The best way to stay safe is to be prepared. Make sure you have a plan in place for what to do if a tornado warning is issued and have a way to stay informed about the weather forecast.
