NBA Announces New 2024 Playoff Format
No More Byes, Standard Bracket for All Eight Teams
Tiebreaker Procedure for Playoff Eligibility and Home Court Advantage
The National Basketball Association (NBA) has announced a new playoff format for the 2024 season.
The most significant change is the elimination of byes for the top teams.
Under the new format, the eight teams with the highest winning percentages will qualify for the playoffs, regardless of conference.
Standard Bracket
The teams will be seeded 1-8 and placed in a standard bracket.
The first round will be a 2-2-1 format, with the higher-seeded team hosting the first two games and Games 4 and 5, if necessary.
The semifinals and finals will be a 2-3-2 format, with the higher-seeded team hosting the first two games and Games 6 and 7, if necessary.
Tiebreaker Procedure
In the event of a tie for playoff eligibility or home court advantage, the following tiebreaker procedure will be used in order:
- Head-to-head record
- Division record
- Conference record
- Overall winning percentage
